Oryoki Practice

If you're interested in joining please RSVP: info@facingthemountain.org. When you RSVP, please let us know if you have your own oryoki set or if you need to borrow one. Loaner sets are available but limited.
Note that this is a two-part series. Please plan on attending both sessiosn as the second session will be very difficult to follow if you have not attended the first session.

Part 1 - Opening, Eating, and Closing the Bowls

In this first session we will focus on the basic mechanics of handling your bowls. We will go over the opening, eating, and closing of the bowls. We will also discuss the history and significance of oryoki practice.
Please bring a sack lunch to eat during the session.
August 24, 2024 - Iternary:
  • 9:00am - 9:10am: zazen
  • 9:10am - 9:30am: Introduction and history
  • 9:30am - 10:00am: Opening the bowls
  • 10:00am - 10:30am: Eating
  • 10:30am - 11:00am: Closing the bowls
  • 11:00am - 11:10am: Break
  • 11:10am - 11:30am: Putting it all together
  • 11:30am - 12:00pm: Q&A - Lunch

Part 2 - Formal Oryoki Practice

In this second session we will practice oryoki in a more formal setting. We will go over the chants and movements, including serving and being served, that are part of the practice. We will also discuss the etiquette of oryoki practice.
A simple meal will be provided (please consider donating to help cover the cost of the meal): rice, miso soup, and vegetables.
